The main characters motivation

The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien
Pg. 27-55

The main characters was not for the war. He was Drafted to go only a month after he had graduated college. When he got his draft papers he kept them secret. He really wasn't motivated to be going into the war, he felt that he shouldn't have to go if he didn't want to because he knew that there were other people that weren't drafted that wanted to go into battle cause they had family that fought before them. He spent that summer working trying not to think about the war. He was not even close to wanting to leave and go fight a war that had no meaning. That summer he was thinking of fleeing to Canada so that he didn't have to go. Then he got to thinking of his family and friends and how the small community that he lived in would ridicule him if he ever returned.

Do you think that he should have the choice whether to be drafted or not?

I think it's terrible when people get drafted that dont want to go. There are tons of people that would be more than willing to go to war. Than there are the people that have a family, or just starting their life. I dont think they should have to go. It should be your right if you want to fight or not. Thank God they didnt use the draft for this war war in.
